Book a Snow Day

Waking to a bright world of swirling white, I worried I had slept in. The windows were frosty around the edges and the landscape of snow was illuminated from the town’s streetlights. Checking my watch, I saw it was barely 4 a.m. My home was a small miracle of warmth in a raging winter storm. It looked like it was going to be a Snow Day. It would be natural to crawl back under the covers and lounge in the comfort of soft blankets, but a Snow Day has a peculiarly galvanizing effect on me:

I can’t wait to live it.

I’m lucky. I know not everyone looks forward to a winter storm: power outages, emergencies, homelessness, cold, work, etc. But when the stars align, a winter storm can be transformed into a Snow Day.

A Snow Day can be sublime.

A Snow Day can be glorious “found time” in life. It comes as an unexpected gift with no strings attached. Your schedule is completely thrown up in the air—landing as a pocket of opportunity, nested in the comfort of your home and close surroundings.

A Snow Day can be a time for making good memories—the aroma of baking bread, the pleasure of sore muscles from shoveling, chores, sledding, and snowman-making, the warmth of subsequent hot chocolate and soup, and ultimately: the pleasure of wrapping yourself and/or some children in a blanket to read a fabulous book. Those stories will never be forgotten—and will give strength for a lifetime.

May all of your storms be Snow Days.
