Using the Appleman Series in Schools

It was exciting to see the Appleman book series used in multiple ways in schools this year. Not only was it a resource for traditional guided reading groups, it was a tool used for individual student interventions, whole class presentations, and for on-line instruction: https://outschool.com/teachers/Heidi-2020#usCOz2PIgh.

With ranch-life topics, stories in the Appleman books were of particular interest to rural students. When instructing emergent readers, it is helpful to begin with topics students are familiar with. While most students enjoy books about animals and children their age, students from rural communities in the American West usually resonate strongly with the tractors, cattle, gardening, and outdoor adventures included in the stories.

Presenting the books in a whole class slide show format was particularly useful during the pandemic this year. When students were required to eat lunch and snacks in their classrooms, the story presentations provided learning opportunities during those times. Inexpensive paper versions of the books could also be sent home to support quarantined students.

It was exciting to see how versatile the Appleman books could be. The series was a useful tool for students learning at school, home, or on-line.
